Alleghenies Ahead: Southern Alleghenies Regional Comprehensive Plan
Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset Counties - Pennsylvania
The Southern Alleghenies is a six county region in West-Central Pennsylvania. The region has a rich history linked to the coal, steel, and agricultural industries. Since the sharp decline of the coal and steel industry in the 1980s, the Region has struggled to retain and attract younger generations. In addition, there are more than 230 local jurisdictions with varying capacities to make the investments needed to compete for households and businesses. Recognizing that coordination and cooperation is critical to the Region's long-term health and competitiveness, the six counties came together to develop a joint comprehensive plan.
Ingalls Planning & Design partnered with czbLLC to assist the six counties in developing the plan. It became Pennsylvania’s largest comprehensive planning and implementation effort and was guided by an important principle; plan regionally and implement locally. After thorough analysis, the development of overarching planning principles and core values, each County honed in on priorities and an action plan to implement them. The Southern Alleghenies Regional Comprehensive Plan won a Best Comprehensive Plan Award from the American Planning Association - Pennsylvania Chapter. |
